Board of Regents Changes Rule on Professional Licenses

The NYS Board of Regents‘ rule removing obstacles to access to professional licenses and teacher certification for DACA-mented students and graduate and other eligible non-citizens went into effect.

nysed-logo-regentsThis new rule opens a pathway to licensure for qualified non-citizens who have studied and worked hard to meet the requirements, enabling them to contribute their skills and talents, to support themselves and their families, and to give back to their communities and to New York State. CLORE and CUNY School of Law are pleased to have supported the Board of Regents and NYS Education Department’s adoption of this rule though legal analysis and persuasive public advocacy. Many thanks to the Board, its Chancellor Betty Rosa and former Chancellor Merryl Tisch, and to the NYS Education Department and Commissioner Elia for their work in promulgating this rule supporting equality and sound policy in access to professional licensure.
